The surgeon is a specialist in determining whether surgery is necessary. He orders various examinations, with the help of which he makes the decision for or against an operative procedure. An assessment always includes an in-depth discussion with the patient in which he/she tries to find out the individual problem. A manual examination often follows in which the problem can be localized by touch, tapping or pressing (e.g. breast examination or examination of the rectum). "The surgeon sees with his hands!" - this is often heard. And really: the sensitive fingers of the surgeon have felt many things that no X-ray could prove.
